A fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behaviours being perceived as novel in some way. A fad is said to “catch on” when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly. The behaviour will normally fade quickly once the perception of novelty is gone.” Wikipedia
With the knowledge that the first email was sent 40 years ago, I guess it’s safe to say that while many of our clients and some of our team truly wish email would just go away, the email “fad” is here to stay … well, for now in any case.

How to de-clutter your inbox the FAD way, and other easy to implement Outlook productivity tips:
- Quick cheat to a clearer inbox: Overwhelmed by the amount of email cluttering your inbox? To get a handle on things without wasting too much time on ‘old news’, create a new folder called “Inbox @XYZ date” (choose a date 2 months before today) and drag and drop all your inbox items that are up to that date into this new folder.
- Managing your inbox: Now that you have a more manageable inbox, use the acronym FAD (file–action–delete) to help filter through your incoming emails to prevent future build up.
- FILE: Drag mails from your inbox into folders/notes/contacts (to file for future reference or legal purposes)
- ACTION: Drag mails into your calendar (actions like meetings which have a specific date and time) and tasks (for action items without a specific date or time).
- DELETE: For everything else, press delete.
