Its early 1994, and South Africans are preparing for our first democratic elections. The country is caught up in the magic of Mandela fever, yet the dark side of sporadic acts of terrorism rears its ugly head and shatters the lives of many in this beautiful country.
Its early on a quiet Sunday morning and A bomb goes off in central Johannesburg and a young basic life support paramedic is dispatched into the ensuing chaos of screaming victims, shards of glass and debris all over the place.
There is little time to absorb anything that is going on. The adrenaline rushes through her veins, medical teams are all over working on multiple victims, yet a young family of 3 – a father, mother and young baby become the center of this young medic’s world – it is like the world stands still so that she can do what needs to be done to bring them all to safety.
What we don’t know yet about this young woman is how profoundly the injury and death of young children will affect her life…………. this is Colette van Heerden’s story.
